Adolescents 360

Adolescents 360

Launching in early 2016 with generous support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, Population Services International (PSI), together with its consortium members the Society for Family Health/Nigeria (SFH/Nigeria), Triggerise, the Center on the Developing Adolescent from the University of California, Berkeley, IDEO.org, and Ogilvy & Mather Africa will work with adolescents, young people, parents, community members, providers, and policy makers in Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Tanzania to design scalable, cost-effective models aimed at increasing voluntary, modern contraceptive use among adolescent girls aged 15-19. This four-year, $30 million investment will not only generate hundreds of thousands of new users of voluntary modern contraceptives, but will also catalyze a new way of designing high-performing adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) programs at scale, using a developmentally and anthropologically informed user-centered design (UCD) process.

Consortium Members

PSI serves as the prime for Adolescents 360, providing overall management and technical, financial, and administrative leadership to the project, as well as on-the-ground activities in Ethiopia and Tanzania. PSI is a leading global social marketing organization with 45 years of experience developing high-impact health programs at scale. Through local network members in 69 countries, and in collaboration with national governments, PSI engages the private sector to develop effective models for addressing market deficiencies. Central to PSI’s global strategy is improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

Society for Family Health (SFH) Nigeria was founded in 1985 and is one of Nigeria’s largest non-governmental organizations. Working with the private and public sectors, SFH/Nigeria uses social marketing and behavior change communication to improve access to essential health information, services, and products. SFH/Nigeria manages direct implementation of Adolescents 360 in Nigeria.

IDEO.org is a nonprofit design organization based in San Francisco, California that works to empower the poor and vulnerable. IDEO.org partners with nonprofits, social enterprises, and foundations using UCD to tackle some of the world’s most difficult problems. ASRH represents the largest pillar of its portfolio, with projects in Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia, and upcoming work in Ethiopia and Rwanda. IDEO.org will lead the consortium through the UCD process, including designing and implementing youth-centered, insight-gathering processes, ideating on solutions, and developing prototypes.

Triggerise was born out of PSI/Mozambique, where a small team started the development of a technology, Movercado, to overcome operational barriers at the bottom of the pyramid regarding management of field agents, free distribution of valued products, last-mile distribution, and referral tracking. Adolescents 360 will leverage Movercado, which can centralize communication messages, organize e-payments, and set up virtual loyalty schemes, as well as generate real-time output data.

The Center on the Developing Adolescent provides technical guidance to ensure all activities carried out as part of the user-centered design process and the models that are developed take into consideration the cognitive development of the target audience.

Ogilvy & Mather Africa is the largest network communications agency in Africa. Ogilvy & Mather serve as the lead creative marketing agency, helping to develop innovative, culturally relevant communications strategies.
